A street with a lot of diversity of Calçada Portuguesa


The Calçada Portuguesa (Portuguese Calçada) is very present in the city of Funchal. While there are many different figures in different streets and avenues, the João Tavira  Street will be bringing together more diverse and also greater number of figures related to traditions of Madeira, like this one with the Madeira tobogan or "basket cars" or carros de cestos in portuguese.

Embora existam muitas figuras diferentes nas diversas ruas e avenidas, a Rua de João Tavira deverá ser a que reúne maior diversidade e igualmente maior número de figuras relacionadas com tradições da ilha da Madeira, como este carro de cestos.

The wickerwork sledge



This is a sui geniris transport of Madeira. Named "carro de cestos" in portuguese, this wickerwork sledge is an experience of descent from the top of the hill not to be missed. The route starts at the Monte, at the top of the city, and ends not far from the center of Funchal. Are characterized by being moved by the feet of two men called "carreiros" (someting like people of the cars, or in specif case, the sledge). It's pure adrenaline, believe.
It's the ideal complement to travel upward in the cable car from the old town of the capital.
