It seems that one of the ends of today bridges of the large and modern cruise ships to give greater viewing angle during operation. But it is not. This is an access with an avant garde architecture in the Funchal Naval Club, a place where the members have access to a bathing complex, with sea, swimming pools restaurant and bar and sport centers.

Parece uma das extremidades que as pontes de comando dos grandes e moderno navios de cruzeiro têm actualmente para dar maior ângulo de visão nas manobras. Mas não é. Trata-se de um acesso com uma arquitectura vanguardista no Clube Naval do Funchal, um espaço onde os sócios têm acesso a um complexo balnear, com mar, piscinas, bar e restaurante e núcleos deportivos.

The island that we see, there in the distance, is called Deserta Grande. It is part of a set of islands called Desertas. They are uninhabited, although guards of the Natural Park of Madeira, which preserve the Desertas Islands Nature Reserve. There is one of the rare colonies of sea-wolf, who is recovering population.
The Desertas, situated southeast of Madeira, are composed of three islands: Ilhéu Chão, Deserta Grande and Bugio.

A ilha que vemos, lá ao longe, chama-se Deserta Grande. Faz parte de um conjunto de ilhas chamadas Desertas. São inabitadas, embora tenham guardas do Parque Natural da Madeira, que preservam a Reserva Natural das Ilhas Desertas. Ali se encontra uma das raras colónias de lobo-marinho, que se encontra em recuperação populacional.
As Desertas, situadas a sudeste da Madeira, são constituídas por três ilhas: Ilhéu Chão, Deserta Grande e Bugio.

We put our feet daily in art on ground, maked from the hands of craftsmen who fortunately continue to awaken the younger generation. From simple black and white rocks arise rich patterns that we ourselves often do not appreciate with due fairness. The same is not true of those who visit us, and are thousands of people who are delighted with the work and even more with how to make them.

Colocamos os pés diariamente em obras de arte saídas das mãos destes artífices que, felizmente continuam a despertar as gerações mais novas. De simples rochas brancas e pretas surgem magníficos desenhos que nós próprios muitas vezes nem apreciamos com a devida justeza. O mesmo não de passa com quem nos visita, e são milhares de pessoas, que ficam encantados com os trabalhos e ainda mais com a maneira de os fazer.

The Santa Maria ship, a replica of the boat used by Christopher Columbus in the "discovery" of America, in a view from de bridge of the Pacific Dream, a cruise ship of Pullmantur, which is now back to Funchal, in his usual Fridays visit.

A nau Santa Maria, uma réplica do barco utilizado por Cristóvão Colombo na "descoberta" da América, vista da ponte de comando do Pacific Dream, um navio de cruzeiros da Pullmantur, que está de regresso hoje ao Funchal, na sua habitual passagem às sextas-feira.

Funchal celebrated 501 years since it became a city. It was on August 21. A day filled with too many cultural and recreational activities. One of them was the action with the team of Asas de Portugal (wings of Portugal), which brighten the skies for decades. It was a return to Funchal, after having acted on the anniversary of 500 years, last year.
In this image you can be seen the two planes that danced in the air brushing the skies with framed art that their speed quickly extinguished.
And with the city looking to the air, I thought of the war, where the same noise of this type of aircraft, away from the works of art, are a serious warning to hide in the nearest shelter. A scenario that would completely banned.

O Funchal celebrou os 501 anos desde que foi elevada a cidade. Foi no dia 21 de Agosto. Um dia muito preenchido com diversas actividades culturais e recreativas. Uma delas foi a actuação da reputada equipa dos Asas de Portugal, que há décadas abrilhantam os céus. Foi um regresso ao Funchal, depois de terem actuada no aniversário dos 500 anos, o ano passado.
Nesta imagem podem ver-se os dois aviões que bailaram no ar pincelando os céus com quadros artísticos que a sua velocidade depressa apagava.
E, com a cidade de olhos postos no ar, pensei nas guerras, onde o barulho deste tipo de aviões, longe das obras de arte, constituem um sério aviso para se esconder no abrigo mais próximo. Um cenário que deveria completamente banido.

I always loved the notion of the use of space on each ship and the solutions that the designers have to be it most functional. This right wing, or starboard, to use the language at sea, in the Volcan de Tijarafe, of the Naviera Armas, does not arise because there is no space on the bridge but to assist in maneuvering in and out of ports.

Sempre me fascinou a noção do aproveitamento do espaço em cada navio e as soluções que os seus desenhadores encontram para que seja o mais funcional. Esta ala saída, da direita, ou estibordo, para utilizar a linguagem marítima, do Volcan de Tijarafe, da Naviera Armas, não surge porque não existe espaço na ponte de comando mas antes para ajudar nas manobras de entrada e saída dos portos.

The memories of the Quinta das Cruzes Museum intersect with the life and history of the city of Funchal. Besides having been the last residence of João Gonçalves Zarco, discoverer of Madeira is more than 500 years of history of the island.
In the nineteenth century is introduced a new design of gardens, construction of sites in ways in litle rolling stones, and the location of the houses of pleasure, melancholic spaces, and the taste of the season.

As memórias do Museu Quinta das Cruzes cruzam-se com a vida e a história da cidade do Funchal. Além de ter sido a última residência de João Gonçalves Zarco, descobridor da ilha da Madeira representa mais de 500 anos da história da ilha.
No século XIX é introduzida uma nova concepção dos espaços ajardinados, na construção dos canteiros, nos caminhos empedrados em pedra rolada, nas fontes em pedra de fajôco, bem como na localização das casinhas de prazer, espaços melancólicos, bem ao gosto da época.

Like the building, the board found in one of its walls, to the side of Calçada of Santa Clara, is old. It is from the Companhia de Seguros Aliança Madeirense (Alliance Insurance Company Madeirense) now by processes of merger in 1978, which strengthened the left seguragora Fidelidade (loyalty).

Two ships, two destinations and two features to provide travel, despite having similar sizes. In the first plane we see the ship Lobo Marinho, from Porto Santo Line, which makes daily trips between Funchal and Porto Santo, the second largest island of the archipelago, which, like Madeira, is inhabited. In the second plane, we see a small ship from Seaborn Cruise Lines, specialized in cruising to a more demanding target of passengers.

Dois navios, dois destinos e duas características de proporcionar viagens, apesar de terem tamanhos similares. Em primeiro plano podemos ver o navio Lobo Marinho, da Porto Santo Line, que faz viagens diárias entre o Funchal e o Porto Santo, a segunda maior ilha do arquipélago, que, tal como a Madeira, é habitada. Em segundo plano, vemos um pequeno navio da Seaborn Cruise Lines, especializado em cruzeiros para um target de passageiros mais exigente.
